Prenatal stress (or maternal stress) is exposure of an expectant mother to distress, which can be caused by stressful life events or by environmental hardships.
For most of their lives women have been conditioned to believe in fears associated with pregnancy and giving birth. The result is exactly what they fear most; stressful pregnancies or painful birthing.

Postnatal Stress
Postnatal Stress or more commonly referred to as postpartum, can occur after pregnancy more often than most people realize.
Risk Factors can include a personal family history of anxiety or depression, financial stress, marital stress, inadequate help with the baby, complications regarding pregnancy or delivery, a major emotional crisis.
Symptoms may begin after delivery or the first year postpartum. They can be different for everyone, and might include the following:
- Feelings of fear, anger or irritability
- Lack of attentiveness towards the baby
- Appetite and sleep loss
- Crying and sadness
- Feelings of guilt, shame or hopelessness
- Loss of interest, joy or pleasure
